Herbs

Growing herbs is the perfect way to make use of that sunlit spot in your yard. Herbs are not only beautiful plants to grow in your garden, but can be used to cook with, to boost your immune system and even as natural cosmetic products. During spring and summer, herbs can grow outside but keep them inside during winter to protect them from the frost. You can find a wide range of herbs at Rushfields Plant Centre, where our experts can tell you everything you need to know to have your own herb garden!

All about herbs

Herbs have been grown in gardens for hundreds of years. Most herbs have a long history, handed down from generation to generation, using medicine to cosmetics and beauty products to flavouring cooking. They're easy-going plants which can be tucked into almost any corner of the garden, but to plunge yourself into their fascinating world dedicate a sunny spot to a herb garden. You'll find it's full of fragrance and flowers all summer: and best of all, it'll quickly become part of your daily routine to pick peppermint for your tea, marigolds to brew up some face cream, or a bay leaf or two for the evening meal.

Popular herbs to grow in your garden

An abundance of herbs can start growing in your own yard, from flowering chives to delicious parsley. To start you off, we have listed some herbs that can not be missing from your herb garden:

  • Culinary: Mediterranean herbs give your cooking flavour and colour, these include rosemary, bay, thyme, marjoram and parsley;

  • Medicinal: make teas and tisanes to boost your health and well-being with peppermint, chamomile, echinacea and lemon balm;

  • Cosmetic: moisturising cream, hair dye and face packs can all be made naturally from herbs grown in your garden. Try marigolds, soapwort (Saponaria), catmint and witch hazel for your own cosmetic herb garden!

All these and many more can be found within our wide plant selection in our garden centre in Poynings, as well as all the tools you need for tending to your garden!

How to grow herbs at home

Although there are many different herbs with different needs, most of them grow best in places that allow for full sun, yet protects the plants from wind, rain and other weather. Possible places to grow your herbs are:

  • Indoors in the windowsill. This way the plants are protected from the weather outside but are still absorbing all the light they need to grow;

  • During periods of moderate weather, herbs can also be planted outside. Grow herbs in pots;

  • Or plant herbs straight into the ground.

The best place for your plants to grow depends on the specific needs. When the temperature drops, you can keep the herbs inside at the end of the year. This way, they are ready to be replanted outside next spring!
