When to plant bulbs
To make sure your spring border bloom fantastically, you have to plant flower bulbs on the right time. Autumn is the perfect season for planting spring-flowering bulbs. The ground is still warm from summer, and the weather is soft. Spring-blooming bulbs such as tulips and daffodils should be planted in autumn, from September to October. If the temperature is still too warm, wait until November and even December with planting autumn bulbs. Spring-flowering bulbs need several weeks to establish their root system. The basic rule for planting autumn bulbs is that they can be planted at any time, as long as the ground isn't frozen.
Autumn crocus bulbs
Besides the famous tulips and daffodils, you can also buy fantastic crocuses at our garden centre. We have several species available from September. Crocuses that push through the snow and show off their colourful flowers are a true sign of incoming spring. We are fond of this autumn bulb. Here's how you plant and take care of the crocus bulb:
- Plant crocuses before the ground freezes in the fall, this can be from September until December, as long as the frost stays out.
- Plant crocuses on a sunny place, in partial shade
- Choose a well-draining soil
- Prepare the ground with organic matter
- Plant crocuses 3-4" (7-10 cm) deep
- Water regularly after planting
